Guide: compose BGM in six steps
Choose a scene and musical shape, listen, then save your WAV and settings.
PicoSketch Free is a free browser-based composer. Open the composer. A fresh session starts with a dark normal battle at 180 BPM, 32 bars and 4ch, about 42.7 seconds. Choosing settings alone does not start composition.
1. Form
“Rhythm-focused” emphasizes repetition and pulse; “Story-focused” emphasizes development. Detailed form options include melody, drama, lyrical and four/six-act stories. Story forms may increase the length when needed.
2. Scene
Choose a normal battle, boss battle, dungeon, field, town/village or event. More scenes and styles are in the expanded options. Selecting an additional scene may set a recommended mood, BPM and title; review these in the next steps.
3. Mood and tempo
Choose brightness or tension and the speed in BPM, normally 80–240. At the same bar count, a faster tempo means a shorter duration. Change one setting at a time and listen to learn its effect.
4. Channels and length
1ch is melody; 2ch adds bass; 3ch adds harmony; 4ch adds percussion. Choose 8, 16, 32, 64 or 128 bars and review the estimated duration. Tone/part options adjust timbre and individual part volumes.
5. Energy curve
Drag the points vertically or use the sliders. There are four points for 8/16 bars, eight for 32, sixteen for 64 and thirty-two for 128. Long curves scroll horizontally. The curve affects note density, rests, rhythm and melodic development, not just loudness.
6. Review and generate
Review the settings and press “Generate” to compose. Edit links return to earlier steps without discarding settings. Seed/settings-file options allow a fixed seed or JSON import. Importing does not generate audio until you press “Generate”.
Listen to the result
Use Play, Pause and Stop on the completed-song screen. Enable Loop to repeat the song. The master listening volume does not affect the WAV. Check device and browser-tab mute settings if you hear nothing.
“Another song with these settings” chooses a new seed even when the seed is fixed. Save a song before replacing it. “Edit settings” returns to step 6.
Save WAV and JSON
Enter a title and choose Save WAV for 44,100 Hz, 16-bit mono audio. Under the further-adjustment options, save this song’s settings as JSON too. Download locations vary by browser and device; on iPhone, also check Files.
The saved settings describe the last completed song, not ungenerated edits. Import the JSON in step 6 and generate with the same version and method to reproduce it. Keep WAV and JSON together.
Tones, long songs and older settings
Tone/part changes on the completed screen resynthesize the same score and affect the WAV. A global preset resets individual tones and volumes but keeps mute settings. Choosing 1–4ch changes the arrangement rather than simply muting tracks.
64/128-bar songs take longer to create. Canceling processing keeps your settings. Older 0.1–0.3 JSON files can use the legacy engine, but changing purpose, mood or bar count switches to the newer method. Keep the original file.
